A Hip-Hop Homage for DJ Format
We were tasked with creating a poster for an up-and-coming gig featuring an absolute legend to the hip hop world, DJ Format. Born and raised in Southampton, he’s become a well-respected hip-hop DJ and producer globally, who’s deeply rooted in the classic sounds of hip-hop, often using samples from vintage records to create his tracks. The poster needed to capture the energy and excitement of the event, as well as appeal to the target audience of local music fans. We took inspiration from the vintage 80s hip-hop posters created by New York artist Phase2, who is credited with creating the visual language for hip-hop. These posters were often made using low-fi, photocopied flyers with markers, cut-up photographs, and glue. They were then distributed by hand, traveling fast along the uptown streets.

For our poster, we wanted to replicate the look and feel of these original handbills. We used a textured background to replicate the original paper, and we incorporated geometric shapes and action lines to convey the energy of the night. We also included a collage of DJ Format performing, which helped to give the poster a personal touch. The final result was a poster that was both eye-catching and informative, and that effectively captured the spirit of the event.
We are proud of the work that we did on this project, and we believe that it is a great example of our ability to create effective marketing materials for the local music scene. We are passionate about supporting musicians from the city, and we are committed to helping them reach their target audience.
